The Norwegian Seamen’s Union has been representing maritime workers’ rights since 1910 and was pivotal to the war effort against the NAzis

Oslo Maritime The Norwegian Seamen’s Union (NSU) has been a steadfast defender of maritime workers’ rights since its founding in 1910. Representing seafarers across various shipping sectors, the NSU has long fought for fair wages, safe working conditions and strong labour protections.

The union has always stood in solidarity with workers worldwide, advocating for social justice and maritime safety. Its commitment extends beyond Norway’s borders, supporting international initiatives that defend human rights and uphold the dignity of seafarers.

During the Second World War, the NSU played a pivotal role in the fight against Nazi occupation, becoming the only Norwegian trade union to have a contingency plan in place after war broke out in 1939. When Germany invaded Norway on 9 April 1940, the NSU leadership successfully escaped, ensuring that the Norwegian merchant fleet did not fall into German hands. This fleet was later organized into Nortraship, the world’s largest shipping company at the time, which played a critical role in supplying the Allied war effort. The NSU’s legacy of resilience and defiance against oppression continues today.
