Bergen Shipowners' Association played an important role maintaining the Norwegian merchant fleet’s ships and operations in WWII

Bergen Shipowners' Association has been at the heart of Norway’s shipping industry since 1899. Representing a diverse group of shipping companies, the association works to strengthen Bergen’s position as a leading maritime hub.

Its members operate across a range of sectors, from offshore services to cargo transport, reflecting the city’s long-standing role in global trade. Beyond business, Bergen Rederiforening is committed to promoting seafarer welfare, maritime education, and the preservation of Norway’s rich shipping heritage.

During the Second World War, Bergen’s shipping community played a decisive role in maintaining the Norwegian merchant fleet’s operations in exile. Norwegian ships and their crews became lifelines for the Allied war effort, transporting vital supplies across dangerous waters. Many seafarers paid the ultimate price and their contributions remain a defining chapter in Norway’s maritime history.
