Hallvard Klungtveit, Norwegian War Sailors Museum
As the Head of Department for S/S Hestmanden – Norwegian War Sailors Museum, Hallvard Klungtveit has dedicated the past three years to preserving and sharing the legacy of Norway’s wartime seafarers.
A seasoned mariner, Hallvard’s extensive experience spans from deck trainee to Chief Officer, navigating passenger vessels, chemical tankers and crude oil carriers. Now, as captain of S/S Hestmanden, he brings both his deep maritime expertise and his passion for history to the Liberation Convoy 2025.
Hallvard’s role in making the idea a reality has been instrumental. Not only did he initiate it all on the Norwegian side, but he has also led the planning and project management while overseeing the necessary upgrades to ensure Hestmanden is ready for the journey to Lerwick, Shetland, then onwards to Kirkwall, Orkney, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Newcastle. His leadership has united crew members, volunteers and maritime professionals in a shared mission to honour the war sailors who played a crucial role in securing freedom during World War II.
Driven by a strong belief that the sacrifices of war sailors have not been sufficiently recognised, Hallvard set out to organise the Liberation Convoy to bring their stories to a wider audience. He is particularly passionate about educating younger generations on the vital role these sailors played in the war effort. Thanks to his vision and determination, Hestmanden will sail once again, ensuring that the legacy of these brave men lives on. We are immensely grateful for his leadership and dedication; without him, the Liberation Convoy would not be setting sail.
